Looking for ways to add a little texture to your painted or papered walls?! We have the solution!
As the world becomes more accessible, it’s important to also remember community. Once again, Fashion Designers are coming together this weekend at the Little Black Dress Gala to support struggling women and youth in our own locale through Help Change My City, and I’m grateful to be a small part of it with my main muse, Aleem Kassam of Kalu Interiors.
Meet the Designers who are using our Exclusive Golden Hummstooth fabric this year on the runway, and be sure to support them as they give so much time and energy to this Gala!
Sarah at Couture Therapy makes Limited - Edition ethical and sustainable womenswear with a minimalistic edge. You can find the collection online, at most markets and local pop-ups around Vancouver, and at select retail stores on Vancouver Island. Her line has been shown down the runway for Eco - Fashion week, Luvngrace Events, LBDG (of course!) as well as showcased at many galleries. Couture Therapy is made locally using sustainable fabrics, and doesn’t mass produce their pieces, staying true to the brand being Limited-Edition.
Janine McAughren crafts contemporary, hand dyed clothing for an eco-conscious woman. Their style combines west coast aesthetics with traditional, natural printing methods to rejuvenate the historical roots of colour. (from LBDG)
Indigo Shores, Ghren's debut collection is contemporary, hand-dyed clothing for eco-conscious women. West Coast aesthetics with traditional, natural printing methods are combined to rejuvenate the historical roots of colour.
Joanne Ricci is creating timeless hand made pieces that transcend trends for the modern woman. Her inspiration comes from her Italian roots and the years she spent working there in Italian fashion houses. Her pieces can be purchased on her website, and are featuring introductory pricing - so act fast!
She has shown her work at Vancouver Fashion Week, Little Black Dress Gala, SHINE, Promenades Sur L'Eau at the Vancouver Aquarium, and several other events around Vancouver for various fundraisers. Joanne offers sustainability through timeless styling, creating pieces that can enhance your wardrobe for many years to come. She, herself, continues to wear some of her earlier pieces from decades ago!
Kim is a triple threat - Artist, Fashion Designer and Model! And hair accessories, and tote bags - ok, she’s everything :) Ethically made in small batches in Vancouver, Canada, with sustainable fabrics sourced locally (some from our own akHOME Collections!). Made for those that appreciate the authenticity of handmade goods.
HAND made with natural dyes?! Jessica designs from every thread and stitch. She grades each of her own patterns to cut and sew them at a local facility here in Vancouver, BC. After the cut and sew, she piece-dyes the garments by hand in natural dyes (made from plants!!!), at her studio in Vancouver. Each of the capsule items are available in their natural colour or botanical colour. How amazing is THAT?!
Tetyana’s hats have been worn at Vancouver Fashion Week and the Deighton Cup, and her designs were on the Runways of Eco Fashion Week and Charity Galas around the City, featured in The Vogue. She is a designer, curvy model, speaker and reigning title holder of Mrs. Canada Globe. Tetyana believes that beauty brings just right amount of attention to change the world! She wants to inspire and empower women to create the world of positivity, possibilities and share her experiences, wisdom and happiness.

Nothing is as thrilling as having someone approach you at the biggest event in town (ahem IDS Vancouver) to let you know you’ve been featured! Well, nothing except being told by the Editor, Athena, herself :)
Be sure to check out their latest issue (F/W 2018) on all things Design - it’s a beautiful magazine packed with tons of inspiration.
We love keeping things ‘local’, which to us means we try to manufacture everything as close at hand as possible. Then the only long trip an object may take it to get direct to customers. We love giving - and having - global access to a wide variety of things created in a microcosm.
Local + Global. That’s us.
We’re thrilled to announce that we’ll be featuring our Food Tables in this years’ Address Assembly 2018 showcase of designers and makers!! BUT ALSO > We'll be launching our NEWEST addition to the Food Furniture collection at Address Assembly - FOOD MATS! You heard it here first ;)
Food Mats are a modern take on the formal 17thc “doily”, with laser cut acrylic taking over the story from crocheted linen. As an ornamental presentation piece, the Food Mat is setting it’s place in the Food Furniture collection, continuing a new tradition in elevating your Dining.
If you live anywhere near Vancouver, be sure to come out for this show - and to say HEY to yours truly. It’s a not-to-be-missed event that supports this great Pacific Northwest creative community.
Address Assembly has been lauded by Azure Magazine as "...the best furniture and home accessories the Pacific Northwest’s thriving maker culture has to offer..."; Gray Magazine labels the event as "a teeming crowd of design-world cool kids"; and the Globe and Mail describes it as "the annual design showcase highlights the work of leading and up-and-coming designer-makers from the Pacific Northwest". Needless to say, we're UBER honored to be a part of not only this event, but this Maker Community that gets so many opportunities to thrive right here on the Pacific Coast!
See you there?!
Will you be in VANCOUVER next month? Save the dates - Sep 20-23 - and come by the Interior Design Show (Booth #1217) to say HI!! Can't wait to see you there.
IDS holds a special place in our hearts at akHOME - we launched our company there last year! It's always an amazing experience to meet the local - and national/international - design community through the show and it's associated events.
While I can't fully disclose what NEW AND EXCITING things we'll be launching this show, hopefully this sneak peek will do for now ;)
We are proud to be supported this year by local artisan lighting experts, Karice Enterprises. Their OLO pendant will be a hi-light to our booth area. Their product lines and custom work shows their enormous passion for creating beautiful lighting products, pushing
creative boundaries to craft the unimaginable with their cutting-edge design.
See you there!!
We’re SO excited to have been shortlisted in this years’ Saltspring Island Ceramic’s Association awards for our Food Tables!! Our lovely ceramics artisan, Kristine Weber, submitted the tables on our behalf (in collaboration also with myself and Birdman the Welder) - and we couldn’t be more proud for this beautiful collaboration to have been selected to be featured in their October Exhibition!!
See you in October, SSI!
While I get excited about pretty much everything I create, Food Tables have been a passion project from the very beginning. Dreamed up about two years ago, it took time to find *JUST* the right artisans to work with. I can’t even tell you how many times I had to slip “GEEZ, I’d love to find an artisan welder!” casually into conversations LOL!
Even when you find the right people to work with, and you have a BRILLIANT idea (hah), you still have to work out what each material can and cannot do. Who knew FLAT ceramics would be such a puzzle?! Such is the manufacturing beast, even with a solid idea, even with the right people - it takes time, prototyping, money, and enduring failures as often as successes.
I love it. And I love our new Food Tables! Perfect as I’d imagined for creating levels of food to display or reach on a bustling, curated table top without having to resort - yet again - to the ubiquitous cake stand. For even greater variation, there are TWO - and they nestle lovingly along the way <3
Get a set while you can - manufacturing is often limited here at akHOME, as everything is locally made by select artisans. Don’t forget to tag #MYakHOME and @foodfurniture in your posting so we can add your beautiful displays to our Stories on Instagram!

Hey Exhausted Mama's and Tired Work-a-holics out there! Who couldn't use a week away from it all this Fall?!
I've made it an annual practice the past number of years to have at least one week away without kids, hubbies, work, etc. to do something just for me, but my goal is always also to leave that week feeling both rested and inspired. I've spent time painting poolside in Palm Springs, designing couture in cafes in Paris, and absorbing the architecture in London.
THIS trip couldn't be more perfect! A photography/design tour of the Baja (escape the onslaught of November rain? YES, please!), be guided and cared for, learn about photography and design, and perhaps indulge in the odd Margarita while you're at it ;) While I've traveled to other, more popular/touristy, areas of Mexico, but I'm thrilled to be exploring the design-rich Baja along with you all through the eyes of this tour!
The trip is organized by Tina Dhillon of Designers Collective - an Architect and Interior Designer who is passionate about bringing people and design together, as well as oft-published photography expert Tracey Ayton. If you don't follow these two ladies on Instagram, YOU SHOULD. They constantly inspire me. I'm excited to contribute some new recipes to the group snack times - served on Food Tables, of course ;) - as well as a sketching workshop for those guests interested!
Can't wait to see you there!
