LBDG | Feature Designers for akHOME + Kalu Interiors Fabric!!

As the world becomes more accessible, it’s important to also remember community. Once again, Fashion Designers are coming together this weekend at the Little Black Dress Gala to support struggling women and youth in our own locale through Help Change My City, and I’m grateful to be a small part of it with my main muse, Aleem Kassam of Kalu Interiors.

Meet the Designers who are using our Exclusive Golden Hummstooth fabric this year on the runway, and be sure to support them as they give so much time and energy to this Gala!

COUTURE THERAPY

Sarah at Couture Therapy makes Limited - Edition ethical and sustainable womenswear with a minimalistic edge. You can find the collection online, at most markets and local pop-ups around Vancouver, and at select retail stores on Vancouver Island. Her line has been shown down the runway for Eco - Fashion week, Luvngrace Events, LBDG (of course!) as well as showcased at many galleries. Couture Therapy is made locally using sustainable fabrics, and doesn’t mass produce their pieces, staying true to the brand being Limited-Edition.

JESSICA REDDITT DESIGN

HAND made with natural dyes?! Jessica designs from every thread and stitch. She grades each of her own patterns to cut and sew them at a local facility here in Vancouver, BC. After the cut and sew, she piece-dyes the garments by hand in natural dyes (made from plants!!!), at her studio in Vancouver. Each of the capsule items are available in their natural colour or botanical colour. How amazing is THAT?!

INTRODUCING | Food Tables - Elevate your Dining!

While I get excited about pretty much everything I create, Food Tables have been a passion project from the very beginning. Dreamed up about two years ago, it took time to find *JUST* the right artisans to work with. I can’t even tell you how many times I had to slip “GEEZ, I’d love to find an artisan welder!” casually into conversations LOL!

Even when you find the right people to work with, and you have a BRILLIANT idea (hah), you still have to work out what each material can and cannot do. Who knew FLAT ceramics would be such a puzzle?! Such is the manufacturing beast, even with a solid idea, even with the right people - it takes time, prototyping, money, and enduring failures as often as successes.

I love it.  And I love our new Food Tables! Perfect as I’d imagined for creating levels of food to display or reach on a bustling, curated table top without having to resort - yet again - to the ubiquitous cake stand. For even greater variation, there are TWO - and they nestle lovingly along the way <3

Get a set while you can - manufacturing is often limited here at akHOME, as everything is locally made by select artisans. Don’t forget to tag #MYakHOME and @foodfurniture in your posting so we can add your beautiful displays to our Stories on Instagram!

It's been an absolute pleasure to get to know the lovely Kayla Fruchtman at Healing Waters International and the HER Initiative down in Colorado. Her passion for providing struggling communities with fresh, clean water is contagious - so much so, we decided to donate proceeds of every 100% Linen "Laguna" pillow sold!

Recently, Kayla and her gracious work were featured in a little blog by "The EVERYGIRL" (haha). Ok, they're huge. And - they mentioned us! Check it out, visit Healing Waters/the HER Initiative and help spread the love!

Empowering Women: How Healing Waters is Bringing Clean Water to People Around The World [Quote excerpt below]

You must have some favorite pieces in your office. Tell us some of them and why.

Oh man, there are so many! My very favorite is a painting that my mom actually did — it’s the iconic photo from The Her Initiative website where myself and three other influencers were doing a “water walk” for the first time in the Dominican Republic. A few other favorite pieces are pillows from Alison Kent HOME — a textile designer who has a line of pillows that give back to us.

INSPIRATION | Maui Vacay + Art

I rarely go anywhere without a pen, and usually also paper. But for our recent VACAY in Maui I packed up all my watercolors, sketch books, calligraphy pens - the works! Hubby was less than impressed with my *overpacking* ;)

Whether working on a specific piece, or just stretching my hands, the tropical colors of Maui were truly inspirational.

Don't forget to check out our INSTAGRAM ak_alisonkent for some videos, too!!
