LBDG | Feature Designers for akHOME + Kalu Interiors Fabric!!

As the world becomes more accessible, it’s important to also remember community. Once again, Fashion Designers are coming together this weekend at the Little Black Dress Gala to support struggling women and youth in our own locale through Help Change My City, and I’m grateful to be a small part of it with my main muse, Aleem Kassam of Kalu Interiors.

Meet the Designers who are using our Exclusive Golden Hummstooth fabric this year on the runway, and be sure to support them as they give so much time and energy to this Gala!

COUTURE THERAPY

Sarah at Couture Therapy makes Limited - Edition ethical and sustainable womenswear with a minimalistic edge. You can find the collection online, at most markets and local pop-ups around Vancouver, and at select retail stores on Vancouver Island. Her line has been shown down the runway for Eco - Fashion week, Luvngrace Events, LBDG (of course!) as well as showcased at many galleries. Couture Therapy is made locally using sustainable fabrics, and doesn’t mass produce their pieces, staying true to the brand being Limited-Edition.

JESSICA REDDITT DESIGN

HAND made with natural dyes?! Jessica designs from every thread and stitch. She grades each of her own patterns to cut and sew them at a local facility here in Vancouver, BC. After the cut and sew, she piece-dyes the garments by hand in natural dyes (made from plants!!!), at her studio in Vancouver. Each of the capsule items are available in their natural colour or botanical colour. How amazing is THAT?!

We love keeping things ‘local’, which to us means we try to manufacture everything as close at hand as possible. Then the only long trip an object may take it to get direct to customers. We love giving - and having - global access to a wide variety of things created in a microcosm.

Local + Global. That’s us.

We are SO VERY excited to introduce you all to our latest project here at akHOME! We're FINALLY launching our first line of dishwares, along with a beautiful set of kitchen items!!!

The Food Tables are our first venture into #foodfurniture. Two nesting - or stacking - tables to elevate your food at any event, especially weddings!

It's been an absolute honor to work with local artisans on this project, including Birdman the Welder and Kristine Weber c e r a m i c s. As a result, every piece is truly one-of-a-kind. And, of course, includes an "artful element" herb leaf to help showcase your delicious edibles!

Shop Local, Be Part of a Story!

IMG_0811.JPG

Probably THE best thing about creating a "thing", is the weaving of story that goes into every piece. While I hope the result is simple to love and appreciate regardless, it's the story that fascinates me deep down.

Our Laguna print is one beautiful example! It started on a trip to Paris Fashion Week - I was noticing all kinds of stripes on the runways and wondering how I could re-create this most basic of patterns. When I got back to the Studio I took a simple piece of silk, and drew stripes with a Sharpie. Not fun yet... I played with it and eventually ended up dropping it to see what patterns could be created.

17.00 JOUE Waves underlay 01b.jpg

VOILA! The spark of an idea!
A repeat pattern was created, then traced with Calligraphy brush pens and scanned back into Photoshop where every line was cleaned. (Yes, this is about as painful as it sounds...)

Now these stripes started to resemble waves, or maybe it was because my next trip had been to Maui that struck me, but OBVS now a "watery" watercolor underlay HAD to happen!

Meanwhile, an Interior Designer friend had connected me with Healing Waters International / the HER Initiative out of Colorado. I called to chat with the Founder, Kayla Fruchtman, and we wondered how we might one day work together cross-border. As it came to being, this design proved to be the perfect thing to collaborate on - and the name "Laguna" - reflecting bodies of vibrant water running through communities in need - came to being.

Since then, proceeds from every Laguna pillow sold have gone to help these amazing, generous efforts, and every dollar you shop on this local product keeps this - and the next - story going.

WHEW!
Who knew so much went into ONE LITTLE PATTERN?! Turns out the painting is often the easy part - learning Photoshop was the hard part!! But I'm continually learning and creating, and as I do, the stories get more and more interesting. At least I think so ;).

You can find these beauts online in our shop and in select stores!

It's been an absolute pleasure to get to know the lovely Kayla Fruchtman at Healing Waters International and the HER Initiative down in Colorado. Her passion for providing struggling communities with fresh, clean water is contagious - so much so, we decided to donate proceeds of every 100% Linen "Laguna" pillow sold!

Recently, Kayla and her gracious work were featured in a little blog by "The EVERYGIRL" (haha). Ok, they're huge. And - they mentioned us! Check it out, visit Healing Waters/the HER Initiative and help spread the love!

Empowering Women: How Healing Waters is Bringing Clean Water to People Around The World [Quote excerpt below]

You must have some favorite pieces in your office. Tell us some of them and why.

Oh man, there are so many! My very favorite is a painting that my mom actually did — it’s the iconic photo from The Her Initiative website where myself and three other influencers were doing a “water walk” for the first time in the Dominican Republic. A few other favorite pieces are pillows from Alison Kent HOME — a textile designer who has a line of pillows that give back to us.

INSPIRATION | Maui Vacay + Art

I rarely go anywhere without a pen, and usually also paper. But for our recent VACAY in Maui I packed up all my watercolors, sketch books, calligraphy pens - the works! Hubby was less than impressed with my *overpacking* ;)

Whether working on a specific piece, or just stretching my hands, the tropical colors of Maui were truly inspirational.

Don't forget to check out our INSTAGRAM ak_alisonkent for some videos, too!!
